Basic Theology: Sufficiency of Scriptures Part 02 - The Rich man and Lazarus

 The Rich man and Lazarus

Previous: Sufficiency of scripture 02

Luke 16: 19-31,
Lazarus died and went to Abraham’s bosom; the place of blessing and the rich man died and went to the fire and he was tormented.

V28, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’

What was the reply?
Reply from Abraham
V29, Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’

They have Moses and the prophets, that is nothing but the Word of God.
Reply by rich man
V30, And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

If someone could just come back from heaven/ hell and preach, they would repent. That is the view of these who seek the supernatural signs and wonders. The simple gospel is not enough. We have got to have signs and wonders and resurrections, or we’ll never be able to convince people.

V31, But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’

Jesus was living proof of that. You don’t need miracles.
Why?
Because the Word of God is powerful enough.

2 Timothy 3:15-17, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

V15, the Scriptures sufficient to save!
V16, The Scripture provides doctrine, all the teaching we need, reproof, and correction.
Reproof meaning “stop doing that,”
Correction meaning “start doing this.”
Instruction in righteousness, taking it a step further in your new path.

V17, so that you will be
Perfect,
Complete,
Thoroughly finished, and
For every good work.

If you want to be sufficient then the Word is to be believed and to be obeyed and in that you have sufficiency.

Sufficiency of Scripture is very vital.
